SPARK Disability Art Festival

The SPARK Disability Art Festival is a Calgary-wide celebration of creative self-expression by emerging and professional artists with developmental, physical, or sensory disabilities, mental illness, brain injury, and/or chronic illness.

Following in the footsteps of the former Balancing Acts Festival, SPARK is presented annually by In-Definite Arts and Prospect/Studio C, and aims to enhance the development of disability arts and culture in Calgary by:

  • Encouraging artists to explore and communicate authentic interpretations of the disability experience, and
  • Providing exhibition and advancement opportunities for artists with disabilities living and working in Calgary

SPARK advances a creative vision of equality that embraces the difference of disability through visual art, rather than normalizing it or rendering it further invisible within mainstream society.

Current SPARK Festival Information

Are you a Calgary artist with a disability? Be a part of this year’s SPARK Disability Art Festival!

The SPARK Disability Art Festival coincides with Disability Arts Awareness Week (typically the first week in December) and observes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3). This year, the SPARK Festival dates will run from November 27th to December 8th, 2017 and will include public exhibitions and other public programming sponsored by the Friends of the Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Society.

SPARK 2017 Call for Artwork Submissions

SPARK has extended an open call to any artists with disabilities interested in submitting artwork for consideration. For this call there are no restrictions on theme, subject matter or eligible media. Visual artists are therefore encouraged to consider the SPARK Festival as an opportunity to take risks, push boundaries and celebrate a lived experience of disability.

Deadline for submissions is September 30. To apply, download the information package here.
